Nunavut's Wellness Framework

For many years the term "wellness" has been a catchword for a variety of health-related issues in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut – exercise, special clinics at health centres, safe sex, planned parenthood, support groups, counseling services, preschool, parenting programs, suicide prevention and self esteem workshops.

Over the past 10 years, "wellness" has also attracted money, energy and time to programs that help develop the human capital of Nunavut. Many of us agree that without wellness programming the future of Nunavut is a darker one. Healthy, whole and "well" residents are Nunavut's most important resource.

Participants at the 2002 Symposium of Nunavut Wellness worked together to outline the roles and responsibilities of the various players in Nunavut. This framework is presented here as a map for future wellness work in the territory. You can click here to view this document. (A new window will open.) Have a look at it and send us your feedback! Does it make sense to you?

In this section we are also including some descriptions of some wellness projects in Nunavut. This document, currently available in a PDF format, is full of great ideas and also the contact information for the masterminds behind them.

Please note that you will need Adobe Acrobat in order to view or print the file. If you don't have this program installed on your computer, it can be downloaded for free from the Adobe website.

If you're involved in a Nunavut wellness project that is not listed here and would like to share your experiences, please send us your information through our contact form so that others can benefit from what you have learned.
