Welcome to the Reality Therapy section
of our website!
Several counsellors in Nunavut have already
been trained in Reality Therapy (RT) and
are using this method to work with their
clients. The purpose of this section is
to introduce new people to Reality Therapy
and to provide existing RT counsellors with
a place to share information and concerns.
In this section you will find general information
about Reality Therapy, Choice Theory and
Lead Management, a selection of articles,
information on training opportunities, contact
information for Reality Therapy certified
counselors, and a private discussion group
for people involved with Reality Therapy.
Accessible only by password, this forum
will allow counselors to air their opinions
and concerns about issues they encounter
in their work.

Information about Reality Therapy, Choice
Theory and Lead Management
What is Reality Therapy?
Reality Therapy is a method of counseling
which teaches us, through self-inquiry and
self-evaluation, how to manage our lives
more effectively.
The core of Reality Therapy is the idea
that regardless of what has happened in
our lives, or what we have done, we can
use certain behaviors to help us meet our
needs more effectively.
The practice of Reality Therapy is an ongoing
process made up of two major components:
1) Creating a trusting environment
2) Using techniques to help people discover
what they really want, reflect on what they
are doing, and helping create a plan for
the future.
What is Choice Theory?
Choice Theory is a theory that explains
both the psychological and physiological
behavior of all people.
Choice Theory explains that all of our
behavior is internally motivated. This differs
from our prior understanding of human behavior
known as stimulus-response theory, a theory
that assumed that all of our behavior is
externally motivated. According to Choice
Theory our behavior is our best attempt
to satisfy one or more of the five basic
internal needs love, power, fun freedom,
and survival at any given time.
It has been widely recognized that Choice
Theory provides the theoretical foundation
for many process and goal-oriented educational
reforms, and is cited as the explanation
for why Dr. W. Edward Deming's management
methods work.
All that is taught through the Institute
for Reality Therapy (counselling, educating,
and managing) is based upon this profound
new theory of knowledge.
There are numerous benefits to learning
the concepts of Reality Therapy and Choice
Theory, and these can be applied in both
personal and professional life. It can add
practical skills and knowledge of behavior
that will enhance your effectiveness in
any role.
Using Choice Theory
- Learn how to help manage and influence
others instead of trying to control them.
- Develop specific communication skills,
based upon trust, not fear, and help others
evaluate and change their behavior.
- Expand your creative thinking to perceive
more choices, which in turn will help
you make more effective decisions.
Using the Lead Management Approach to
Quality Organization
- Become a lead-manager who eliminates
coercive practices and develops an environment
of trust in the workplace.
- Increase your awareness of quality,
and learn how to engage workers in ongoing
discussions about quality, and how to
achieve it.
- Manage others so they understand that
the essence of quality is continual improvement,
as defined and evaluated together by the
manager and the worker.

Reality
Therapy Certification Process
The Reality Therapy certification process
consists of a five-part course of self-directed
study:
1) Basic week
2) Practicum 1
3) Advanced week
4) Practicum 2
5) Certification week
Participants who choose to continue beyond
the basic week may do so at their own pace.
The certification process can be completed
in a minimum of 18 months.
IRT instructors teach basic and advanced
weeks year-round across Canada and the United
States, and at various other international
locations.
Participants in groups of six to twelve
can be involved in the following activities:
instructor presentations, small group discussions,
role-playing, observation, and viewing training
videos.
The practicums following the basic and
advanced weeks consist of at least thirty
hours of study supervised by an approved
Reality Therapy Certified practicum supervisor,
whom the student selects.
Each intensive week is four days long.
Participants must be in full attendance
in order to obtain a certificate of completion.
There is no obligation to complete all five
segments. Individuals may progress to whatever
level they feel has met their needs.
